Ornamental Slate Re-Roof

The Brief

A character property needed a slate re-roof that preserved its ornamental detailing. The roof carried decorative slate work that gave the building much of its character, and the homeowners did not want that lost in a straightforward strip and re-cover. There were also several tricky details to work around, so the job needed a roofer comfortable with careful, traditional work rather than a quick job.

What We Did

Our work included:

• Stripped and re-slated the roof: The old covering was carefully stripped off and the roof re-slated, giving the property a sound, watertight covering built to last.
• Hand-cut slates to replicate the ornamental pattern: We hand-cut slates to match the original ornamental design and to replace damaged ones, so the decorative detailing that gives the building its character was faithfully preserved.
• Formed detailed bespoke leadwork: Detailed leadwork was formed and dressed on site to the valleys, hips and abutments, keeping the roof watertight at its most vulnerable points.
• Worked carefully around the awkward details: There were several tricky details on this roof, and each one was worked around patiently to keep the finish clean and the roof sound.

The Result

A re-roof that keeps the character of the original building. The ornamental slate and the bespoke leadwork are finished to a high standard, and the hand-cut detailing sits true to the original design rather than being simplified away.
