Bespoke Slate New Build with Copper Dormers

The Brief

A bespoke, high-end new build called for something well beyond a standard roof. The design specified random-width natural slate for a characterful, traditional finish, and the property also featured copper dormers and integrated solar being fitted by other trades. That meant our roofing work had to be planned and carried out in close coordination with the other specialists on site, so every element came together cleanly on a one-off property with no room for compromise on the detail.

What We Did

Our work included:

• Set out the random-width natural slate: Random-width slate has to be graded and set out with real care so the courses sit true and the widths read naturally across the roof. We took the time to get the setting out right before a single slate went down.
• Installed the natural slate roof with careful detailing: The slate was laid to the correct gauge and headlap, with careful detailing around the ridges, hips, valleys, abutments and roof penetrations so the finished roof is both watertight and good to look at.
• Coordinated around the copper dormers: The copper dormers were installed by other specialists working alongside us. We coordinated our slate work with them so the roof covering met the dormers cleanly and the details integrated properly.
• Coordinated around the integrated solar: The solar electrical side was handled by other specialists as well. We worked in with them so the roof covering integrated neatly with the solar and the whole roof read as one considered surface.
• Kept the roof watertight throughout: On a bespoke new build with several trades working together, we kept our part of the roof sound and weathertight at every stage so the other works could proceed without issue.
